Flexible data management key for competitive advantage
Flexible data management key for competitive advantage

In order to remain relevant and competitive in today's marketplace, enterprises are rapidly adopting the newest cloud, mobile and big data technologies. However, without proper integration of these solutions for interoperability, many businesses may fail to fully capitalize on potential advantages.

Information Week commentator Jim Ditmore reported that keeping up with these new technologies demands database experts, as most organizations lack the knowledge to properly integrate and operate them. He explained that cloud services can be especially daunting to manage, which can then hinder innovation and response to changing business demands. Ditmore asserted that businesses need to assign database architects or focus on software-as-a-service (SaaS) or infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) to ensure strong implementation and operational models. Further, he explained that outlining a cloud roadmap that utilizes SaaS and IaaS can ensure that organizations don't overextend the data center's capacity.

Big data is a major consideration that has complicated data management. Ditmore explained that the two main aspects of the big data trend include the actual data and its traditional analytic functions, as well as real-time decision making. While enterprises may be able to handle data analytics as part of traditional warehousing, he asserted that real-time decisions are the key to unlocking big data's potential. Leveraging remote database services can empower businesses to use real-time analytics for more informed decisions.

Integration quickens response
This capability of quickly predicting and responding to continually changing demands will become increasingly crucial to maintaining a competitive advantage. As a result, Ditmore explained that it is key for corporations to design an IT organization approach capable of efficiently delivering consistent, quality analytics that can elevate business knowledge. Centralization of the database and project management is key to ensuring consistent processes, measures, tools and templates. By consolidating infrastructure and IT functions such as application development and BI, enterprises are more agile, and poised for innovation.

Forrester analyst Michele Goetz agreed that data management is a critical focus for business growth. However, she explained that top-performing organizations are those that have been able to accommodate a more flexible inward flow of data, and can leverage available technologies to manage growing volumes and varieties of information. She explained that the most effective data management architecture is flexible and agile, and maximizes invested technologies for optimal value.

By constantly building on the database foundation by integrating these new technologies, businesses will be able to achieve maximum ROI while staying ahead of rapidly changing trends.
