Effective communication between IT and business leaders is critical

When an organization doesn't have enough IT support, it's possible for breakdowns in communication to occur. While it is certainly crucial to have the right technological solutions, it is just as critical that the company has positive relationships in place between IT leaders and those that helm the business as a whole. If one department can't understand the other, it's possible for data breaches and other costly problems to begin piling up. According to Dark Reading, a recent study by Tripwire and the Ponemon Institute discovered that one of the biggest issues facing today's businesses is the fact that there is a disconnect between what IT professionals know about risk and what they are telling the company's leaders. Of the 1,321 respondents, who were all involved in IT security within their enterprises, 75 percent asserted that risk-based security metrics are important, yet many weren't conveying that to others. When asked, "Why don't you create metrics that are well understood by senior executives?" 40 percent admitted that they only talk to executives about such matters when a security incident has already occurred. Another 35 percent claimed that informing non-technical leaders about these metrics and what they mean is too time-consuming and takes up too many resources.

The risk of downtime
When decision-makers don't know what risks they may be facing, they don't have the opportunity they need to help address these concerns and prevent compromises. Many times, the result of poor communication is downtime, which can be devastating for any company. The Huffington Post pointed out that another Ponemon Institute study estimated that downtime costs businesses an average of $5,600 per minute. Because the typical incident lasts 90 minutes, each instance of downtime results in $505,500 lost.

Better communication may be one way for organizations to help prevent problems that could lead to downtime and other negative effects. As IT and non-IT leaders work together to understand and mitigate risk, customers, employees and the enterprise itself will become more secure. By getting remote database support, it may be possible for any firm to keep its sensitive information under control as these issues are worked on, as well as generate the data needed to gain a more complete picture of the current risk environment.
