Security needs are rising for small businesses
Running a successful small business involves making security a top priority. When organizations allow their most critical information and systems to go unguarded, it's always possible for cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access and cause devastating compromises. But while the important task of protecting the enterprise may seem overwhelming, it need not be a source of anxiety. As long as leaders invest in remote database support, they will be well on their way to enjoying the benefits of a safer organization.
According to PCWorld, even the most diligent employees can fall victim to cybercrime in today's increasingly complex threat environment. The news source recalled the story of "Pamela," an employee at a Chicago manufacturing company. Pamela had always taken care to use strong passwords and engage in safe browsing behaviors, but that didn't stop her from contracting malware. This virus forced her browser to forward all of her attempts to access the organization's online banking website to fraudulent locations. When she logged into the company's account, Pamela saw a notification asking her to call customer service to resolve a problem.
This is when the situation escalated. The person on the other line stole Pamela's employer's account information, which the worker was tricked into providing, and leveraged it to clear out the firm's bank account to the tune of more than $300,000. Luckily, PCWorld reported that Pamela's organization was able to get the money back and survive the attack.
This is not an isolated incident. In a recent Trend Micro-sponsored survey by the Ponemon Institute, it was revealed that over the past two years, 78 percent of businesses have suffered at least one data breach, while only 9 percent asserted that they hadn't experienced any such incidents. Trend Micro stated that one of the primary reasons this is such a pervasive issue is that especially when it comes to smaller firms, data protection tends to fall to the wayside. In fact, 65 percent of small and medium-sized businesses admitted that their sensitive or confidential data isn't secured through encryption or data loss prevention technologies.
